Democracy: convergences and divergences of its praxis

Abstract

This article makes a brief analysis of the normative correlation between democracy and politics, using as references Habermas (1999, 2000 and 2008) and De Sousa (2007, 2009 and 2014). The modern state is synonymous with democracy in its formal sense where equality and equity are political rights for citizens; however, in practice, compliance with the norm passes through intersubjective assessments that regularly generate the crisis of the system and jeopardize its legitimacy. It is therefore a question of understanding that democracy with respect to the state depends much more on the participation of citizens in the construction-representation of power and less on the centrality of the state.
